Sabang Diving is a Sabang-based dive operator running small-group fun dives, PADI and SSI courses and multi-day packages across Pulau Weh, Aceh. Certified fun dives start from USD 30 (tank, weights and a local guide included) and a PADI Open Water course from USD 320. What we offer
We are a full-service centre on the island, a short boat hop from the Gapang and Iboih beaches where most diving happens. Our work is built around three things: training new divers properly, guiding certified divers to the right site for the day’s current, and looking after the small details, fresh tanks, correctly sized rental gear and briefings that match your experience level.
Groups stay small, usually four to five divers per guide, so nobody gets lost on a drift and beginners get real attention. We dive year-round and adjust the daily schedule around sea state and local Friday-prayer timing, so you always get the calmest, fishiest conditions available. Whether you want a relaxed reef dive, a high-voltage current site, or a deep technical wreck, we plan the dive to your certification and comfort, never the other way around.
Named dive sites we run
Pulau Weh sits where the Andaman Sea meets the Indian Ocean, which is why its sites swing between gentle coral gardens and serious current. These are the ones we dive most:
- Batee Tokong (Temple Rock) — an exposed seamount with split currents, 5 m at the top dropping past 35-40 m. Often called the fishiest site on the island: fusiliers, trevallies, snappers, barracuda and reef sharks. Advanced level.
- The Canyon — a dramatic arch and walls near Kilometre Zero, roughly 10-35 m, where current funnels barracuda, big trevallies and reef sharks past steep scenery. Great for wide-angle photography. Advanced.
- Sophie Rickmers wreck — a 134 m German cargo ship scuttled in the 1940s in Pria Laot Bay, sitting around 37-55 m. A genuine deep-wreck dive for Advanced-plus and technical divers, with black coral, schooling snapper and giant trevally on the structure.
- Arus Balee (Crazy Current) — a channel of swirling, shifting current, 5-30 m, run only in suitable conditions and only for experienced divers. Tunas, trevallies and reef sharks.
- Seulako Drift — a classic drift around the small island off Iboih, 5-30 m, with fusilier schools, turtles and bumphead parrotfish.
- Limbo Gapang and the house reefs — gentle slopes off Gapang Beach, 3-25 m, rich in macro: nudibranchs, frogfish, seahorses, cuttlefish and octopus. Ideal for training, relaxed dives and night dives.
- Rubiah Sea Garden — shallow coral, 2-18 m, perfect for first dives and check dives.
Marine life you can expect
The mix of Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific species here is unusual. On the current sites you commonly see blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, eagle and mobula rays, dogtooth tuna, giant and bigeye trevally, barracuda and dense schools of fusiliers and snappers. Green and hawksbill turtles, bumphead parrotfish, groupers and moray eels show up on the reefs.
The shore and rubble sites off Gapang and Iboih are macro country: nudibranchs, frogfish, seahorses, pipefish, cuttlefish, octopus and a long list of shrimps and crabs. Pulau Weh also has a place in diver lore for very rare megamouth shark sightings, the kind of once-in-a-lifetime encounter nobody can promise but everyone hopes for.
How it works
Message us with your dates, certification level and how many dives you want. We confirm availability, suggest a daily plan and tell you exactly what to bring. On the morning of your dive you check in, we fit any rental gear, run a briefing matched to the site and your level, then head out by boat to local sites, usually a short ride from Gapang or Iboih.
Most days run two or three dives with a surface interval, water and snacks in between. Course students follow a structured schedule across several days, mixing theory, confined-water skills and open-water dives. If you are new, we start you shallow and calm and build up; if you are experienced, we will take you to the spicy sites when the current cooperates.
Season and pricing
Pulau Weh is diveable all year, but the calmest, clearest window is roughly February to May, with sunshine, stable seas and visibility that often runs 30 m and beyond. April to October is the broader dry season and also reliable. Late November to early January brings more rain and wind, though diving still goes ahead on suitable days. Water sits at 28-29 degrees C, with cooler thermoclines of 26-27 degrees C at depth, so a 3 mm wetsuit suits most divers and 5 mm is handy for deep or repetitive days.

Deep and surcharge sites such as the Sophie Rickmers carry an extra fee reflecting limited numbers, special gas and longer boat time. Full equipment rental for fun dives is typically USD 5-10 per dive.
Why Sabang Diving
We are local and we dive these sites constantly, so we read the current rather than guess it. That matters more here than almost anywhere in Indonesia, because the difference between a brilliant dive at Batee Tokong and a difficult one is the timing of the tide. Pulau Weh is still refreshingly undeveloped compared with Bali or Komodo, simple guesthouses, quiet beaches, no crowds, and we like it that way.
Our prices are honest and lower than the big-name islands, our groups are small, and our equipment is maintained and replaced on schedule. If a site is not safe for your level on a given day, we will tell you and offer a better option. How to reach us
Fly to Banda Aceh (BTJ), the access point for Pulau Weh, with daily domestic connections from Medan and Jakarta and some direct international flights from Kuala Lumpur. From the airport it is about 20-30 minutes by taxi to Ulee Lheue port. The fast ferry (Express Bahari) to Balohan on Pulau Weh takes 45-60 minutes; the car ferry takes around 2-2.5 hours. From Balohan it is roughly 40-60 minutes by road to Gapang or Iboih, and we can help arrange pickup. Land after about 2:30 pm and you will usually overnight in Banda Aceh for the morning ferry.

Do I need to be certified to dive in Sabang?
No. If you have never dived, our Discover Scuba Diving experience (USD 60-100) lets you try it safely with an instructor on a shallow, calm site, no certification required. If you want a full licence, our PADI or SSI Open Water course runs over three to four days and certifies you to dive independently worldwide.
When is the best time to dive Pulau Weh?
February to May is the calmest and clearest period, with stable seas and visibility often over 30 m. April to October is also reliable. Late November to early January is wetter and windier, but we still dive on suitable days. Water stays warm year-round at 28-29 degrees C, so a 3 mm wetsuit is enough for most divers.
Which sites suit beginners versus experienced divers?
Beginners and check dives are best at Rubiah Sea Garden, Limbo Gapang and the Gapang and Iboih house reefs, calm, shallow and rich in macro life. Experienced divers head to current sites such as Batee Tokong, The Canyon, Seulako Drift and Arus Balee, while the Sophie Rickmers wreck is reserved for Advanced-plus and technical divers.
What is included in a fun dive?
A standard fun dive includes boat transport to local sites, a divemaster or instructor guide in a small group, tank and weights, and drinking water. Snacks, fruit and a simple lunch are often included on full three-dive days. Full equipment rental, BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins and mask, is typically an extra USD 5-10 per dive if you need it.
